A brief history of the Oman Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in the Sultanate of Oman
The Oman Syro Malankara Catholic Community has grown in to its present form with the founding steps taken by Rev.Fr.Gheevarghese Mannikkarottu Cor-Episco during his short visit to Oman in 1998. After his interaction with the Malankarites in Oman, he brought the spiritual needs of the community to the notice of the then Bishop His Excellency Bernard Grimoli OFM Cap and that resulted in starting a Malankara Mass in Ghala Parish in 1999. In the succeeding years Malankara masses have been started in Ruwi and Salalah parishes too. The community started growing in an organized structure by 2000.The Pastoral care and leadership provided by Rev. Fr. JosephTyagaraj, Rev. Fr. Varghese Manalel, Rev. Fr. Chacko Mannisseril, Rev. Fr. Santhosh Karingattil, Rev.Fr. Jerome Peedikparampil, Rev. Fr .George Vadakkuttu, Rev. Fr. Peter Kadamancodu, Rev. Fr. Mathai Iranithara and Rev.Fr. Varghese Chempoli, were always remembered with gratitude.
Our long cherished dream of getting a Malankara priest was materialized in 2008 by the arrival of Rev. Fr. Christudas Charummoottil OIC as the Assistant Parish Priest of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Ghala. The community has taken in its present form during his three and half years of commendable services here. After his going back to India, Rev. Fr. Mathew Marotimoottil replaced him and he served the community for about one and a half years. Rev. Fr. Antony Plamparampil from Trivandrum Major Archdiocese appointed in 2013 and served the community till November 2016. We place on record our sincere gratitude to these priests for their valuable and dedicated services rendered for the growth of the community. Now the community is growing under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Thomas Moothanteth from Thiruvalla Archdiocese.
Now we have two Masses in Ruwi, three in Ghala, one in Salalah, one in Nizwa and one in Sohar in a month respectively in addition to one monthly prayer meetings for the units separately and one common prayer meeting coordinated by the central. We also have a regular monthly study class on ‘Malankara Liturgy’ in order to make it meaningful to our community members especially to our younger generations. We also used to conduct cultural competitions for our Children and Youths based on the Holy Bible and the Malankara Liturgy named as ‘Malankara Fest’and used to bring all our members of the entire Sultanate once in year under the banner ‘Malankara Meet’.
During these years His Beatitude Moran Mar Baselioc Cleemis Catholicos visited thrice and Most. Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos, Archbishop of the Arch Dioces of Thiruvalla and Most. Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignatios, Bishop of Dioces of Mavelikkara visited once and many of our priests visited us on various occasions like holy week celebrations and anniversary celebrations.
We take this occasion to thank our Head of the Church Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos for His parental care and support providing to us and to our bishop His Excellency Paul Hinder OFM Cap for the support and assistance providing for our growth. We also place on record our deep sense of gratitude and thanks to all the priests serving in the entire Sultanate of Oman.
We wish to express our deep gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Sayed for His generosity and open mindedness for giving permission to carry out all our activities in the entire Sultanate of Oman.
